This is the final design modification of these Liberty Head gold dollars, featuring a large Liberty Head and a Closed Wreath on the reverse. This combination first appeared in 1849 and continued through 1854. This example is one of the very few known Proof examples of the Liberty Head type. Approximately 10 Proof examples of 1849 are known as the first year of issue. Just this single Proof 1854 is known, with not more than one each for 1850 through 1853, most of the latter not currently confirmed to exist.

Provenance:
From Stack's session of Auction '85, July 1985, Lot 1874.
Obverse:
Last year of the Type I design. Style as foregoing.
Reverse:
Similar the preceding.
Commentary:
"Possibly the only known Proof, however, the Breen monograph says one is in the Smithsonian."
