The head of Liberty was very slightly modified for this coinage issue, giving her a slightly stronger, more matronly appearance. 4,400 circulation strikes were minted along with a small number of Proofs. Containing very light hairlines on Liberty’s cheek, this example is one of four Proofs enumerated by Walter Breen. The Proof from the “Memorable Collection,” sold by Abe Kosoff’s Numismatic Gallery in 1948, was described as “Brilliant Proof. Faint cheek lines.” Although not plated by Kosoff in that catalogue, it is possible that this is the Memorable specimen.
