The Dahlonega Mint opened in 1838 for the sole purpose of minting gold coinage from the local mines of Georgia and North Carolina. In the same year, another Mint opened in Charlotte, North Carolina for the same purpose. This issue represents the only coin of this denomination from either of these facilities. Just 1,120 examples were minted with less than 100 surviving and very few in high quality. This example is highly unusual for its display of full denticles on obverse and reverse, representing one of the first struck.

Purchased from Superior Galleries, March 28, 1978.

Commentary:
(adapted): "Obverse: Full denticles. Clashed. Reverse: Small DOLLARS. Full denticles. Clashed. Rare with full denticles."
