This is the famous transitional half dime issue of 1860, without the statutory legend on either side. The obverse features the regular Liberty Seated design with stars, in use until 1859. The reverse has the revised “cereal wreath” design that first saw use in 1860. This is a highly popular and widely recognized pattern half dime, due to its inclusion in the Guide Book since the first issue dated 1947. While most patterns were struck in Proof format, these transitional half dimes are apparently all prooflike Mint-State examples.

Provenance:
From RARCOA's sale of the Harry X Boosel Collection, April 28, 1972, Lot 1018.
Obverse:
Liberty Seated type with stars.
Reverse:
The "Cereal Wreath" reverse.
