This second hub has more delicate features with open claws. This is a very rare coinage date with just 2,442 circulation strikes and another 30 Proofs minted. Today, perhaps 25 or 30 circulation strikes and a dozen Proofs survive. Gold coins generally did not circulate in the east, thus Philadelphia mintages were generally quite low. This choice Proof example is among the finest of survivors and is from the collection of John Work Garrett, a member of the family that founded the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
