This impressive “gem” Proof is one of the finest known survivors from a mintage of 76 such coins. This is the normal date variety, as are all Proofs and some of the 1,500 circulation strikes. Additional examples are known with a sharply doubled 2 in the date-all circulation strikes. The Proof mintage consisted of several small groups coined throughout the year. Today, approximately 30 Proofs survive, with most of lower quality.

Provenance:
From Stack's sale of the DiBello Collection, May 1970, Lot 782.

Commentary:
(adapted): "Obverse: Two-thirds of J.B.L. visible. Lightly lapped, most of R filled. Reverse: Lapped. Date low as to DOLLARS and bow top. Top of first 8 clear of filling."
