This is the same small date obverse die as HBCC-3103, but with large reverse stars. The obverse is a late die state with a heavy rim break over E of LIBERTY. Walter Breen considered this a rare variety. This variety probably deserves a solid Rarity-6 rating. Three examples were included in the Bass Collection: an early die state without the obverse rim break , and one of similar quality to this piece. The third, in a late die state as displayed here, was clearly of lower quality.

Provenance:
From the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries sale of the Louis Eliasberg Collection, October 1982, Lot 356. Earlier from the Chapman Brothers, 1893.
