This example is from the second reverse die for 1807 half eagles and was not known to Walter Breen when he published his 1966 monograph on half eagle die varieties. In his new varieties monograph, Breen noted that Edgar Adams had described this second reverse with a crack from the rim to the scroll passing through the E of STATES. Based on die state evidence described in Harry Bass’s notes, this example was struck before the other variety at HBCC-3109. This Mint-State example from the Bass Collection is clearly the finest known.
