This is another intriguing year for half eagle coinage. Total recorded mintage for the year was 28,029 coins from three die marriages, including this overdate. Only seven or eight examples of this overdate variety exist, and all are in Mint-State or extremely close. The Eliasberg coin was called Proof by Walter Breen. However, it was catalogued as a non-Proof in the auction of that collection. The present coin from the Bass Collection has a pedigree including Waldo Newcomer, Col. E.H.R. Green, King Farouk, and Clifford Smith.

Provenance:
From Paramount's session of Auction '82, August 1982, Lot 1932. Earlier ex Newcomer, Green, Farouk, Clifford Smith, 1976 ANA Convention sale.
