Quarter eagles dated 1806 are from two different varieties, both overdates. These are the first true overdates of the quarter eagle denomination. This obverse die was already prepared for use in 1804, but never actually saw service until Mint personnel placed it into service in 1806, when they changed the date to read 1806 by punching a digit 6 over the existing 4. Only about 80 examples of this die variety exist from a mintage of 1,616 coins for both varieties combined. Walter Breen predicted the mintage of this single die variety to be 1,136 coins, a close estimate.
