This is the only known variety of 1814 and is an overdate. However, it represents a different obverse die than was used for 1813. The reverse die has a very faint die crack through the base of D in the denomination, continuing through the period. This die crack is also visible through the tops of certain letters in AMERICA and is identical to a die crack seen on the second 1813 variety, HBCC-3126. Therefore, it is a certainty that both issues were minted from the same reverse die.

Provenance:
From the Paramount International Coin Corporation sale of March 1978, Lot 432.

Commentary:
"Obverse: Die center punch lump between curl and ear. Remnants of a 3 clearly visible at both sides of top of 4, below its crossbar at left, and on both sides of crossbar at right. Hairline crack between 1 4, continuing towards star 13. No clash. Reverse: That of 1813B. Modified devices; motto letters tall, shield more nearly symmetrical, right wing bone more angulated than that of 1812. No tongue. S(T) a bit right of being centered over E. D markedly double punched. Period high relative to D. Crack base of D thru period, continuing thru tops of MERICA. Clash in shield. Lapped."
