During the Civil War, mintages of gold coins remained quite low in terms of both circulation strike and proof format. Only 5,750 circulation strikes were minted in 1862. This variety utilized the same obverse die earlier used for the 1861 Proof coinage. Another gem example among these rare Proof issues, the Bass coin has incredible aesthetic appeal. Only 35 Proofs were recorded as minted on February 16, 1862, with approximately 15 survivors. We cannot imagine any finer examples than this.

Commentary:
(adapted): "Obverse: That of 1861 Proof. Moderately hubbed head, moderately thick truncation. Reverse: Date even and a bit low of being centered. 6 centered under L."
