An extremely popular design created by William Barber, this obverse features a seated figure of Liberty facing left with her right hand touching the head of an eagle and her left arm resting on a shield, holding a sword in her hand. The reverse features an eagle with wings spread, a shield covering its left wing at the viewer’s right. This popular coin design is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful patterns produced. The “Amazonian” name associated with this pattern design apparently originated with H.P. Smith and David Proskey in their catalogue for the Parmelee Collection.
