This obverse die has been described as an 1802 over 1 overdate for at least the past 60 years and continues to be listed as such today. It is now believed by some that this is not actually an overdate. Two fine die lines may be seen within the digit 2; however, these die lines do not provide sufficient evidence to describe this as an overdate. This die variety meets the requirements of two different varieties described by Walter Breen in a study of quarter eagles he prepared in the 1960s. Breen’s variety numbers 1 and 3 are identical.

Provenance:
From Abner Kreisberg's November 27, 1972 mail bid sale, Lot 1080.

Reverse:
Commentary:
"Obverse: Date repunched. Reverse: Spike shield to wing."
