When Walter Breen published his monograph on the early half eagles in 1966, he was only aware of three varieties among 1834 With Motto-half eagles. Two of those were described with a Plain 4 obverse and the other with a Crosslet 4. This variety was later published in his New Varieties monograph with just a single example known. This important variety was consigned by the widow of a Dallas collector to the auction where Harry Bass purchased the coin. Ironically, the other Dallas collector kept his coins in the very same bank vault used by Harry Bass!
