An intriguing variety with the reverse featuring the current Large DOLLARS type, punched over Small DOLLARS lettering. Evidently, this die first received an impression from the old Small DOLLARS hub, then an impression from the new hub with large letters. This was almost certainly an undated die left over from 1854 that was corrected to reflect the updated large letters style. All Proof examples known are from this reverse die, which was first described by Harry Bass in the early 1970s. Only five or six Proofs are known.

Purchased from Abe Kosoff, August 3, 1971.
