This die marriage appears to meet Walter Breen’s requirements for both varieties 2-C and 2-D. In his monograph, Breen described his variety 2-C as always with a heavy rim break on T of UNITED. Later, in his New Varieties monograph, he noted that variety 2-D exists both perfect and with a rim break on T in UNITED. This example matches Breen’s description of 2-D, and has a die crack through top of T in UNITED forming a retained cud, i.e. a rim break that has not yet fallen from the die.
