This is a new die variety not known to Walter Breen in 1966. However, he later described it in his New Varieties monograph as variety 1-J. This variety was discovered by collector Marvin Taichert. Harry Bass purchased this coin privately from a New England firm in 1977. Since publication, a few other examples have been attributed with four or five examples now known. The reverse die has a prominent die chip over the second star from right in the middle row.
